5. What actions do you believe could be taken in the future to help prevent your child(ren) or close friends from ever developing an eating disorder?
One thing we can all do as individuals is practice placing as little emphasis as possible on appearance, especially weight and size,and more on strengths of personality and character. Off the top of my head, I cannot name an instance where it is necessary, appropriate, or constructive to discuss a person’s weight. (The only exception I’ve come up with is if you are a physician or dietician working with a malnourished patient. )
Since treatment I try to avoid commenting on it all, but I am far from perfect. Starting now, I am recomitting myself to this goal.
